Most sleep advice focuses on duration. An emerging body of research is also examining regularity—how consistently someone goes to sleep and wakes up from one day to the next.
Why timing might matter
Our internal clock helps coordinate hormones, metabolism, alertness and body temperature. Frequently shifting sleep schedules may create a mismatch between those systems and the demands of the day.
The research is still developing, and regularity should not become another reason to feel anxious about sleep. Shift work, caregiving and illness can make fixed schedules unrealistic.
A practical target
When possible, keep waking time within a reasonably consistent window. Morning daylight and a gradual evening wind-down can also help reinforce the body’s timing signals.
